Omega-3 is actually a poly-unsaturated fatty acid. The nutritional benefits associated with Omega-3 first became of interest, in the 1930s. Since then, it has been known to be useful in aiding the body’s natural growth and development.

Dietary Supplements and Foods

There are many dietary supplements available on the markett today. However, it can be found in foods such as: salmon, tuna and herring. For vegetarian diets, it can also be derived from eating: walnuts, pumpkin seeds and tofu.

Scientific Studies and Diet

A scientific investigation of an Inuit tribe who survived on an oily fish diet, led to an important nutritional revelation. It acts to lower levels of triglycerides in the blood. Too many of these, can contribute to heart problems in later life.

In a study carried out with patients who suffered with bipolar disorder, it was discovered to have effects similar to mood stabilizers. This was conducted in 1999. The study perhaps sheds some light on the well known old wives’ tale that: fish is good for the brain.

Docosanexaenoic-acid is a particular form of Omega-3. In a more recent neurological study, further health benefits were uncovered. The scientists reported that this typ of Omega-3 may offer protection from the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

Further research has revealed that Omega-3 could also possess anticoagulant properties. This means that it may stop the blood from clotting. Another study demonstrated how it may be utilized to lower high blood pressure. Today, the varied nutritional benefits associated with Omega-3 make it a useful addition to any diet.
